What impacts do inclusive STEM high schools have on their students?
Compared to their peers at comprehensive high schools, 12th graders at inclusive STEM high schools:
- Take more advanced math and science courses.
- Have higher GPAs and somewhat higher test scores.
- Identify more with science and engage in more STEM extracurricular and out-of-school activities.
- Have stronger STEM career interests.
- Have higher aspirations for postsecondary degree attainment.
In measuring these impacts, iSTEM controlled for students’ grade 8 achievement in math, reading and science; taking algebra prior to grade 9; gender; race/ethnicity; special education status; English proficiency; and parents’ education level as well as school Title I improvement status and percent economically disadvantaged students.
